Summary

  • dyingStudents of earlier courses can refer back to this site as a refresher and to learn more about the latest privacy and security updates, significant changes, information and advice.
  • Use the Introduction: Topics list as a TOC / Subject Index for a complete reference.
  • Students who implemented only a few changes are welcome to re-enroll in the future to review, fine-tune and expand their protection.
  • Updated examples & articles for major OS upgrades (macOS, iOS typically in Fall):
  • macOS (formerly "OS X"): 10.13.x (High Sierra)
  • iOS (iPad, iPhone): 11.x
  • Added articles for Android: 8.0 (Oreo); Windows: 10
  • Ongoing: newest articles appear at the top of Reference sections for each topic
  • older (more than 3-4 year old) article references will usually be removed
  • new subsections will be added as needed

Spring 2015

  • updatingAdded new sections (based on TCYOP-2): Mobile Privacy (replacing earlier Travel section), Internet of Things (IoT)
  • Reorganized main topics and References with more subsections; included reference articles as examples

Winter 2016

  • moved Offline sections: Passwords Intro and Backups earlier; expanded Password Intro
  • Replaced "Mac OS X" with "macOS"

Fall 2017

  • Take Control of Your Online Privacy 3.0 is now preferred edition; check your e-book for information about upgrading
  • updated course sections to reflect changes in 3.0, e.g., what's new in 3.0 & 2.0; sample excerpts {TCYOP-3: 4-5}
  • page references now include 3.0 as well as older (2 & 1.1) editions, e.g., {TCYOP-3: #; TCYOP-2: #; TCYOP-1: #}
  • CrashPlan (remote backup) no longer supported/recommended: see section Backups
  • Office 2011 not supported on macOS High Sierra: see section Updates
  • Equifax breach: see section What Do You Have to Hide? for recommendations about Identity Theft protection
