On NOS 2.1 (MP2K and eMate), 4-16 levels of gray are available.$AITL<CYR@8@Newton-friendly pagesCYRQ@Although in principle, Newt's Cape should be able to handle most HTML, here are some suggestions for best results.CYSaB@ " think "small": size, dimensions, etc. and "simple" (mostly text) to optimize small screen, slow transfer, limited heap (for MP120, even simpler/smaller)CYT0@ " use small graphics, and include ALT strings for any IMG or AREA objects in case your browser doesn't support graphics (or load them by default)CYV x@ " keep markup simple (avoid frames and nested tables)CYV @ " avoid wide tables that might require landscape orientation (or horizontal scrolling). keep number of columns relatively small to maximize width and minimize word breaking/wrapping. ALIGN is supported, but non-left may not work correctly if columns are too narrow.CYX@ " correct HTML syntax is a good idea (test first in a desktop browser). Newt's Cape will hopefully ignore syntax errors and undefined tags. use minimal syntax (good idea to get rid of extraneous tags, e.g., <TD> instead of <TD><P>... will often depend on authoring tool used). follow character entities with ;. surround attribute values with "".CY[@ " make preformatted text narrow and use a monospaced font: PRE text may not lineup properly unless viewed in landscape, and/or with a small font such as Minico (set in Appearance options)CY]ID@ " simplify formatting. Newt's Cape may not reliably locate links or the ends of lines or paragraphs if there is bold, font size changes, or non-left alignment. You'll have most accurate results by minimizing such formatting, especially before links, or by making separate paragraphs.CY_@ " use "small, plain" graphics: large ones take transfer time, heap/memory; may require scrolling on narrow screen or small table cells; plain, animated and interlaced GIFs; JPEGs; check color mapping to gray scale.CYa.@ " use META information to define Newton-specific behavior. You can map URLs so that when a user taps a link or submits a form, a NewtonScript method runs. For example, the NewtATut tutorial displays GIFs in a desktop browser; on the Newton, it runs methods to re-create the screen. Or, you can provide a slider transparently instead of a TEXT input field, or popup a view instead of following a link.CYd@ " provide .pkg files for downloading (until someone writes an unstuffit or unzip utility)Ce@eF@Transferring Documents/Files&@TransferDocsCYf)@ @HTML textCYfa@@NIECYf@This is automatic.
