- Death: a cell with 1 or less, or 4 or more neighbors, "dies"
- Birth: an empty cell with exactly 3 neighbors will be "born"

- Clear
- clears area, resets generation counter
- enter initial configuration
- by adding a pattern, or toggling a single cell,
or dragging over an area to fill, or Random button
- Step
