• Prefs: changed "NYT User" label to user Accounts menu containing NYT; if you have a subscription for another crossword site (requiring cookies or secure login), let me know if you would be interested in future CrozzWord support for it
• Prefs: added menu (after Sites label, before shorter user site URL) for CrozzWord category updates (e.g., site lists for Authors, Newspapers, etc.) -- in case of temporary or permanent outages/slowdowns:

• "close" window key: ctrl-W (Mac); Alt-F4 (Win); Esc (all platforms); note: on Zaurus, Esc now closes dialogs; however, Esc still not detected for main window -- quits abruptly)
• Macintosh: separate About, Quit, Prefs(OS X) commands on system menus now active; ctrl-Q checks for unsaved puzzle; for Mac OS 9, drag&drop local .puz onto CrozzWord icon works; for OS X, starting with puzzle from desktop not working (perhaps I after I upgrade to OS X and can experiment...)

• since there are many more sites, the Open hierarchy has been extended with a new 'site' level, to keep menus shorter/more navigable:

• each memory source (Internal, CF, SD/MMC) has two Document subdirectory sites: default (octet-stream) and x-crossword; is anyone using x-crossword (if not, I'll remove); is anyone using x-across (if not, I won't add); removed the MIME type preference. You can still add your own directories via +Sites preference; currently, adding directories via Add Favorites not supported; if you use different local directories or lots of .zip files, let me know so I can increase 'local' support (most of my effort has gone toward improving organization of remote sites for online use)

• Many hosts could fit in more than one category -- it's often difficult to decide the "most natural" fit in a pure hierarchy. However, cross-references can provide more flexibility. For example, the new Favorites category contains *daily, *weekly and *monthly subcategories, with links to sites in Newspapers/Magazines and Major Sites; by convention, * prefix on host (or site) indicates that it is updated on a regular basis. There are also a few built-in links within other categories, e.g., Authors: Longo,Frank~ links to Major Sites: Litsoft: Frank Longo's Parlor; by convention, a cross-reference link has a ~ suffix. You can add your own using Favorites:Add Host command; Reset All to remove all user-added entries.

  • initially it's probably best to run CrozzWord without other applications running (I had run into one situation where it ran out of memory during https: authentication; I need to find out how much to increase memory allocation at startup)
  • with JSSE installed, NYT User and Password fields appear in Prefs*; Login button appears in Open dialog
  • login itself may take many seconds (with several redirects)
  • with successful login, New York Times sites are added during next update (Cat. button); otherwise, they're skipped
  • Daily/Weekly: New York Times (1996-); only latest puzzle is scrambled
  • New York Times: Cru Cyptics and New York Daily archives; NYT archive yearly pages also contain a few special/holiday puzzles
• [Reg] extract puzzles from .zip files on web sites; you can also access a local .zip file if you include a path to it under Local Directory sites; .zip files are copied locally to /tmp/crozzword/ and deleted when CrozzWord exits
• category/site lists reorganized: Litsoft, Jack's Puzzles (each .zip file a separate "host"), New York Times, ...; I will update the sites list (here, below) later; note: long site or puzzle names can messup layout of Open dialog -- I need to try other ways of specifying layout constraints
• progress and error messages during Cat., Login and selecting a Host appear at bottom of Open dialog, rather than in a separate popup; popup alert/progress/errors still appear for getting a puzzle and other situations (maybe too wide now, but better than too narrow)
