Requirements
CrozzWord requires a Java Runtime Environment/Virtual Machine (JRE/JVM) that supports
Sun JDK 1.1.8 (or greater) or Personal Java 1.2 specification. Most desktops probably have
an appropriate, compatible JVM already installed;
if not, download JVM.
For other platforms, if not built-in, JVM should be available from vendor CD or
support site. In order to access multiple web sites, and open and save puzzles
on local storage, CrozzWord is a standalone Java application rather than a browser-based applet.
CrozzWordM, a separate version for smaller devices such as cell phones,
requires J2ME (Micro Edition), MIDP 1.0 (or greater).
Please let me know of success with other devices, configurations.
- Zaurus
- for Sharp ROM, if Jeode JVM (formerly from Insignia)
is not pre-installed, install it separately
- tested primarily on Zaurus Z5000D with ROM 1.13 (installed both Internally and on CF);
there should be no problems with more memory or newer ROMs/models
- compatible with Sun's J2ME Personal Profile JVM (contact me for different run script)
- for OpenZaurus, Jeode & libraries need to be installed/configured (extract it from Sharp ROM)
- separate libraries for secure New York Times (NYT) subscription access are available to registered users.
- PocketPC
- Jeode JVM is available on iPaq installation CD;
Jeode may be available separately via Esmertec/Handango for other hardware
- currently requires manual installation (copying several files)
- note: I have not tested this recently on an actual device...
- libraries for secure NYT access available to registered users
- Microsoft Windows
- tested on Windows 98, 2000, XP
- libraries for secure NYT access available to registered users
- Macintosh OS X
- tested on OS X 10.2.2-10.2.8 (Jaguar)
- libraries for secure NYT access built-in
- Macintosh OS 8.1-9.2.2 (Classic)
- requires Macintosh Runtime for Java (MRJ)
- tested on 8.1 and 9.2.2 with MRJ 2.2.5
- secure NYT access does not work due to missing MRJ classes
- Symbian Epoc
- requires Personal Java or J2ME
- tested on Sony Ericsson P800; other devices?
- secure NYT access does not work (on P800) due to missing PJ classes
- J2ME/MIDP
- color or grayscale screen recommended
- ability to download/run 64K .jar
- tested on Sony Ericsson P800 and various desktop emulators; other devices?
- secure NYT access will be available for MIDP 2.0 devices
- Other platforms, e.g., Linux
- JVM ≥ 1.1.8
- no separate version at present, though see Download section if you'd like to try
