CrozzWord: Features/Screenshots

CrozzWord is an application for displaying and solving crossword puzzles and cryptics.

"[Reg]" refers to features available after entering a registration code; "[≥ #]" refers to features as of certain versions.

CrozzWord provides the following features (click links for screenshots):

• play on your choice of platform: Zaurus, Windows, Mac OS X, Mac "Classic" (8.1-9.2), iPaq Pocket PC, Symbian(Sony Ericsson P800); J2ME/MIDP P800, generic phone [emulator], Motorola i85s [emulator], RIM Blackberry [emulator]
• access puzzles in many common formats: Across Lite, Crossword Compiler [≥ 1.3], Crossword Creator [≥ 1.3], CrossWord Express [≥ 1.3], Crossword Wizard [≥ 1.3], Universal [≥ 1.3], Eclipse [≥ 1.3e], CrossDown [≥ 1.3e], Crossword Construction Kit [≥ 1.3e], plus a few site-specific formats; note: due to space limitations, J2ME version supports only Across Lite and Crossword Compiler formats
• play built-in samples, or puzzles from local directories, or from extensive categories of remote sites, e.g., Authors, Major Sites, Newspapers/Magazines
• [Reg] registered users can access many more sites directly, including New York Times (with a NYT subscription; see Requirements); and add sites to Favorites or other categories
• get next puzzle in file list or date sequence
• save game in progress; [Reg] or archive a site for later offline use
• from Edit menu, selectively check or reveal answer
• skip to incomplete/incorrect guesses
• customize size, font and color via preferences
• view/scroll long clues, including cross references
• extensive help (screen) [PJ help files, J2ME help files], about information

Most notable differences in J2ME version (1.0) compared to Personal Java version (1.4):

• smaller screen usually. e.g., P800 displays keypad for J2ME apps
• menu commands map to special buttons and overflow menu, with cascading screens rather than groups of popup menus
• Help localized to each menu/screen
• fewer puzzle sites and formats due to smaller memory; cached categories minimize updates
• Favorites and some Prefs omitted
• shorter Recent saved puzzle list
• no secure NYT subscription access (until MIDP 2.0)
