Many external links may be obsolete -- if you have updates, please send.
There may be problems with .pkg files (esp. for Mac OS X); safest to use .zip archives.
- 24 Apr 2018: Newt's Cape is now freeware -- for all users (not just formerly registered users).
this page includes unexpiring versions of Newt's Cape, including Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Russian versions;
the password for the .zip archive files is: turkeylurky (not needed for .pkg)
(Thanks to those of you who registered over the years. I wish I had made these files public ages ago...)

I'd especially appreciate feedback if the new overview and book sizes reduce the
"hang" problem
(also see new Hemlock 2.0b1);

[same version "v" -- just replaced files]
- 15 Nov: updated the Newt's Cape examples page with
recent, plus five more hybrid JavaScript/NewtonScript examples:
Pico Fermi Bagels:

[1.x/2.x example] updates current time as text, analog, (2.x only: digital clock);
JavaScript included for desktop browsers;

about Newton packages to Notes (2.x only: select folder/store)
- 10 Sep: Hotmail may now require SSL (Secure Socket Layer) -- if so, sorry
(implementing SSL, if feasible, would probably take several months);
remalarm.htm [2.x example] list/remove alarms
(potentially useful if you schedule items and then remove that folder)
- 3 Sep: Hemlock 1.2.2 search tool
- 6 Aug: JPEG attachments received by SimpleMail 3.3 can be viewed with Newt's Cape:
- Choose the JPEG part of a message in the InBox and ignore the 'no stationery'
warning. (The 'Part' picker in SimpleMail's InBox message
view actually switches attachments into the body of a message)
- select File:Open Inbox in Newt's Cape; it looks in the body for likely JPEG candidates
and uses your specified resolution (i:General:Res.) -- thx to Peter Rand for testing/summarizing this
- 23 Jun: added more items to the problems/questions page;
one user reports using IrDA to transfer HTML pages from iMac to Newt's Cape (via Sloup)
- 31 May: JPEG 1.0f-2 .pkg
- 13 May: added ISO-8859-2 encoding -- thanks Simon.
If you know of URLs for Big5 encoding modules, let me know.
- 21 Mar: updated version of Cyrllic encoding
-- thanks Joe Chen
- 19 Mar: German localized version of Hemlock;
Sloup & IrDA info: send desktop HTML docs via IR?
- 26 Feb: updated version of Peter Rand's help document/book
- 17 Feb: We'd appreciate it if those of you who registered
before Sep 1st, 1997 would upgrade for $10.
(if you're not sure about the date or if you've got a credit, email me).
If you are still using "Fix ISO",
I'd recommend that you try the Newt's Cape Encoding plugin,
plus the ISO-8859-1 module; eventually I'd like to remove the interim "Fix ISO" code.
- 10 Feb: Other application news.
Avi's Backdrop v1.2.5
supports use of background pictures from Newt's Cape-generated books. In addition to containing
a graphic as first book element, the ISBN must begin with A!: -- you can set this via META attribute
in document, or via Other Options:Book ISBN. Deep Green
should soon import chess games (.pgn files) as a Newt's Cape helperApp.
If you are using Tibet and a digital camera
tibetjpg.htm
example can convert/copy those JPEGs to Newt's Cape's cache.
Introduction
These pages and files are only for Registered Users of Newt's Cape.
Check here periodically for new versions and tools -
this page is kept small for faster viewing of newer information, especially on Newton.
(this page will shrink again after version cleanup).
New users: be sure to use one of the versions on this page; the public evaluation version
on regular newtscape.htm page expires after 45 days (there's no 'regcode')
See separate page about known problems, bug reporting
2.1e-2 (5 Mar)
- all versions available (including public eval)
- 2.x: download and run Java applets in .jar files
via Waba VM/subset (though probably the easiest
way is for most users to download saved Newton .pkg versions)
earlier beta changes.
Some older versions provided in case I introduce a serious problem into latest version.
Note: packages are 2.x-only, transfers are http unless otherwise indicated
general .pkg instructions
Newt's Cape 2.1 (.zip)
Thanks to persistence of several loyal users
(though don't expect that you'll always get what you request!;-)),
a MP130 shipped across the country,
and Greg's energy, we now have a JPEG converter plugin for Newt's Cape.
If you have praise or problems, contact Greg directly
(greg@accesscom.com),
though you can also copy Steve on messages.
JPEG converter requires Newt's Cape 1.6h-2 (or greater). 2.x-only.
It will probably not work well (or perhaps at all) on severely
resource-constrained models/configurations, such as MP120.
Subsequent versions may be a little smaller/faster -- this version includes
some debugging information to assist in finding/fixing problems more expeditiously.
For now, i:General:Images:original (unconverted)? should be turned off.
if you access a JPEG URL directly (i.e., in status area), it will be
transferred, converted and cached, but not immediately displayed since
Newt's Cape is not the "helper app". However, if you then select it from
the Image cache, or it's referenced in an HTML document, the image
should appear as expected. Only tested on a small number of ~small
images. Let us know how it works.
You will need 1.0e2 if you want to use the Image store preference (in Newt's Cape 2.0g-2).
1.0f2 allows JPEGs without .jpg or .jpeg extensions.
JPEG 1.0 (.pkg)
- 1.0f2 [67K] (for Newt's Cape 2.0b-2 and greater)
JPEG 1.0 (.zip)
- 1.0e2 [34K] (for Newt's Cape 2.0b-2 and greater)
This is useful if you are viewing web pages that are encoded in different languages/character sets,
for example, Japanese, Chinese, Russian, Korean. Earlier this code was embedded in separate versions
(~J, ~C).
In general, you probably should not install Encoding unless you need it.
The ISO-8859-1 module
should be used for extended (European accented) characters; when Encoding is installed,
it automatically ignores the Newt's Cape "Fix ISO" preference (which will eventually be removed).
If this is installed, an Encoding entry appears in the "i" menu.
Encoding 1.0 (.pkg)
Encoding 1.0 (.zip)
"regular" versions of NewtPack 3.4
There are currently no beta versions of NewtPack.
(beta NewtPack 3.5c-2, available to NewtDevEnv users, supports "unit references" --
let me know if you need that)
For other tools, see standard registered Newt's Cape user page,
Steve's Newton page. Here are a few URLs for your convenience:
Note: 2.1 users can continue to use the initial/public (1.0/1.0a2) version
HTMList 1.0k-2 (23 Jan 00)
- 2.x: Inbox:Newt's Cape:Add Bookmarks now works with Text Stationery (for SimpleMail 4.x)
- (docs still need updating to include RouteBook)
earlier beta changes
HTMList 1.0 (.pkg)
HTMList 1.0 (.zip)
- k-2 [18K] (2.x)
- e [8K] (1.x)
