Summary
- Solving crosswords can be a social activity: a way to meet people,
propose marriage, play together, stay together, ... -- or a source of conflict.
Quotes
- "Whenever I ask people how they got started solving puzzles, the answer
is always the same: They picked it up as a child from someone they loved,
usually a parent or a grandparent. Their memories of spending one-on-one time
with a loved one are warm and nostalgic. Perhaps they started solving
in adulthood in order to rekindle those feelings.
I remember draping myself over the back of my father’s armchair early on
Sunday mornings when I was a child, just so I could watch over his shoulder
as he solved the New York Times Crossword. He whizzed through the puzzle,
and I thought he was the smartest man in the world. My father also taught
me how to fold the paper so only the crossword was visible, and that on
newsprint a pen made for a more pleasant writing experience than a pencil.
He traveled a lot for work, and I treasured those quiet hours when I had
him all to myself. The first time I attempted the Times’s Crossword as an adult,
I dutifully folded the paper the way he had taught me, and pulled out a pen.
New technology has allowed people to connect over puzzles in the form of
group texts and other chat formats. I know more than a few adults who say
good morning to their mothers by sharing their Wordle, Spelling Bee and
Connections scores. Grandparents buy subscriptions to the puzzles so they
can bond with grandchildren who live far away. It’s not quite the same as
solving the crossword over a slice of pie, but it’s almost as effective."
