  • Steve discovered his computer obsession at Seattle's 1962 World's Fair,
    coded his first programs at Univ. of Washington in 1968,
    and used the Internet (then, Arpanet, for telnet, ftp and email) at Stanford Univ. ~1972.

  • Steve has been fascinated by "hypertext/media" and electronic books for several decades.
    His 1981 PhD dissertation ("Searching for Information in a Dynamic Book") evaluated the use of
    an electronic history book by 5th grade students; he subsequently researched interactive encyclopedias.
    In 1995, he developed and distributed a hybrid book reader / web browser / development tool
    -- Newt's Cape -- for the Newton MessagePad. Now, he enjoys multiple reading options on his Apple iPad.

  • Steve first programmed in Basic (teletype) and in Fortran & Algol (punchcards) in the 60s.
    He taught Logo and Smalltalk to middle-school students in the 70s. He became adept
    in high-level, object-oriented languages such as Smalltalk, LISP, NewtonScript, Java and JavaScript
    in the 70s-10s on workstations, personal computers and handhelds.
    He produced/sold Newton-based programming environments (NewtDevEnv and Newt's Cape) in the 90s.
    His interest continues with Apple's Swift language and Playgrounds.
